    The Creator

Story: In the clash between humanity and Artificial Intelligence (AI), a former US agent must make a defining choice. Tasked with hunting down the enigmatic architect of advanced AI, known as the Creator aka Nirmata, he faces unexpected complexity when he encounters a young girl with extraordinary powers.

Review: We are living in an age dominated by AI, where these machines, designed to aid us, also loom as potential threats, capable of usurping not only our jobs but potentially our very existence. Set against the backdrop of a war between the humans and AI robots, ‘The Creator’ is a timely and thought-provoking piece of cinema. The film begins with an old news report on how artificial intelligence and robotics have invaded various aspects of our life.

After an AI-powered bomb destroys Los Angeles, the US government shuts down all its AI programmes. But a new threat is emerging in the form of New Asia, where robots are seamlessly integrating themselves with the human population. To put an end to this, the US government manufactures a massive military spaceship called ‘Nomad’ with unparalled powers of destruction.

Director Gareth Edwards along with his co-writer Chris Weitz totally transport us into this make-believe world that looks and feels dangerously real. Each and every aspect of their imaginative story creates a visual spectacle that elevates the experience of watching it unfold on the big screen. At times, the film’s pace drops and the complexity of its sci-fi narrative makes ‘The Creator’ cumbersome in parts. The extreme ideas depicted in the film are far-fetched but not entirely impossible. Nevertheless, 'The Creator' maintains an air of mystery surrounding Nirmata's true identity throughout.

The bond between the former US soldier Joshua (John David Washington) and the young AI robot Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) is heart touching and emotionally potent. Little Voyles is spectacular in her portrayal of a character that is complex, powerful and yet vulnerable. The young child lends Alphie the required innocence and cuteness without robbing the character of its unimaginable power. Allison Janney as the highly motivated and shrewd Colonel Howell from the US army borders on being cliched.

‘The Creator’ excels in its ability to drive home the point about the power of AI and technology in general.

Cinematographers Greig Fraser and Oren Soffer bring James Clyne’s grand production design to life. The film's visual brilliance stays consistently top notch even when the writing falters. Hans Zimmer's music blends beautifully with the proceedings and together, these elements breathe life into the fictional world of AI as humans.

'The Creator' confronts us with our deepest AI-related fears in a vivid and extravagant manner. While we can view it with a sense of skepticism, it underscores the harsh realities of both the advantages and disadvantages of the new tech, a truth that cannot be disregarded.
